Nutri. Sci. remembers Professor Dorothy J. Pringle

It is with a heavy heart that we share of the passing of Nutritional Sciences Emeritus Professor, Dorothy J. Pringle. Dr. Pringle was at the UW from 1949 until her retirement in 1985 and continued to be involved with the department until her passing at a still-vigorous 97. In 2013, Dorothy was awarded a citation by the Assembly of the State of Wisconsin for her service to DNS and to celebrate her 95th birthday. As a graduate student, professor of home economics and professor of nutritional sciences, she joined the staff of foods and nutrition in what was then the Department of Home Economics in 1953. Her main research was on social and economic influences on food habits and nutritional adequacy of diets of minority families both domestically and abroad.

Dorothy felt it was important to build a solid base of research in biochemical and biomedical nutrition and she worked hard to make her research relevant to diverse audiences. She was a pioneering advocate for dietetics and for the idea of public service by undergraduate and graduate dietetics students.  She conducted studies on the frequency of feeding and the effects of low-carbohydrate diets for the United States Air Force, developed the Coordinated Undergraduate Program in Dietetics, represented UW as the Chair of the Biological Sciences Divisional Committee in Washington D.C., and earned the Advisor Award of Merit.

Dorothy’s years devoted to teaching and empowering students focused on applying course material to real-world situations.  As a skilled and dedicated educator, Dorothy’s passion for conveying the value of studying nutrition helped to better the field of dietetics overall and create multiple generations of skilled dieticians and nutrition professionals.  She will be sorely missed.

An obituary by Dorothy’s nephew Carl Blesch is here.  Visitation is
scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 12:30 p.m., followed by a funeral
service at 1:00 p.m., in the Resurrection Chapel at Oakwood Village
University Woods, 6205 Mineral Point Road in Madison.
