Principal Research Interest:
Infant nutrition: fat-soluble vitamins, calcium and phosphorus metabolism, energy metabolism.

Research Summary:

The goals of this group are to improve the nutritional status of both premature and full-term infants utilizing animal models when necessary. Our newborn population includes the births at Meriter Hospital (3500 per year) both in the normal and intensive care nurseries. We have been evaluating neonatal piglets as a model for the study of the energy requirements and utilization. Our studies of the metabolic/nutritional effects of dexamethasone on newborn piglets and premature infants, as led us to studying the mechanism for the effects of dexamethasone on intestinal development in the newborn. There are also ongoing studies evaluating the vitamin K requirements of premature infants on parenteral nutrition.
